The closed fishing season for sardines in the Zamboanga Peninsula has been moved earlier and will commence on November 15.
Last year, the closed fishing season in the Zamboanga Peninsula started on December 1 and concluded on March 1, 2023.
The Department of Agriculture said that the National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council unanimously approved the adjustment in the implementation of the closed fishing season for sardines and other small pelagics in the East Sulu Sea, Basilan Strait, and Sibuguey Bay, shifting it to November 15.
According to the DA, research conducted by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Region 9 shows that the spawning period of mature sardines peaks during the months of October until January. This research is part of the National Stock Assessment Program of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the NFRDI.
BFAR Administrative Circular No. 55 series of 2014 provides for a regular review of the closed fishing season to be conducted by the BFAR, NFRDI, the academe, and industry experts to determine the best strategy that would ensure the sustainability and conservation of sardines.
“Our policies are continuously subjected to reviews and assessments. If scientific research finds our measures in need of improvement, then we commit to modifying our programs based on scientific evidence,” said DA-BFAR National Director Demosthenes Escoto.Zamboanga Peninsula moves up sardine fishing ban to November
