Up to P2,500 weekly discount! DTI announces increased benefits for seniors & PWDs

By Eileen Mencias

Senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will soon enjoy a 5% discount on basic necessities and prime commodities for purchases worth up to P2,500 per week, a significant increase from the P1,300 limit set 14 years ago.

Trade Secretary Fred Pascual announced that the joint administrative order (JAO) discount has been raised to P125 per week from P65. Trade Assistant Secretary Amanda Nograles clarified that the discount will only apply to locally manufactured products, excluding imported ones, and there is a specific list of eligible basic necessities and prime commodities.

In addition to restricting the discount to local products, Nograles explained that senior citizens or PWDs availing of the discount must purchase four different kinds of items to qualify. For example, if a senior citizen or PWD only purchases sardines or corned beef for the week, the discount will not be applied. However, if they purchase sardines, coffee, soap, and bottled water that week, they can avail themselves of the discount.

Rice is included in the list of discounted items, but no discount will be given if purchased from micro-businesses such as neighborhood sari-sari stores or cooperatives, or from the Department of Agriculture’s KADIWA sellers.

Senior citizens and PWDs can also enjoy a 5% special discount when purchasing liquefied petroleum gas for cooking, with the discounted purchase limited to 11 kilograms every six months.

Nograles said that booklets are still required to avail of the discount, but senior citizens can designate representatives. If another person claims the discount, they must present the booklet, the OSCA ID, their own ID, and an authorization letter from the PWD or the senior citizen.

Furthermore, Nograles said that online purchases are now eligible for the 5% discount, with the DTI leaving the implementation to the platform or online seller.

The new JAO will take effect immediately upon publication or by Monday, March 25.
