The Bureau of Immigration (BI) and the Social Security System (SSS) have inked an agreement that extends social security coverage to temporary workers in the government.
Under the memorandum of agreement signed on March 9, about 800 temporary workers in the BI will benefit from the deal. The workers will be enrolled as self-employed members of SSS under the KaSSSama sa Coverage Program, and BI will serve as a coverage and collection partner of SSS, authorized to collect and remit the monthly contributions of these workers through a salary-deduction scheme.
SSS president and CEO Rolando Ledesma Macasaet emphasized that this partnership is designed to ensure the future of all temporary workers in government agencies throughout the country, as they will be entitled to social security benefits such as sickness, maternity, disability, retirement, funeral, and death benefits.
The KaSSSama sa Coverage Program has been established in partnership with 1,531 local government units, 499 national government agencies, 111 state universities and colleges, and 68 local water districts, covering temporary workers and collecting a total of over P5.5 billion as of December 2022.
