A delegation of five Philippine game development companies made headways at the Nordic Game 2023 event in Malmö, Sweden, generating some $1.67 million in export sales and 71 trade leads that could be converted into additional sales.
According to the Department of Trade and Industry, the Philippine game developers had 26 business-to-business meetings from May 23 to 26, 2023 at the Nordic Game 2023 event, Europe’s premier game developer conference.
The companies that joined the event were GameOps, Inc., Neun Farben Corporation, Mata Technologies, Inc., Seaversity Inc., and Taktyl Studios.
The DTI said this marks the first time that Philippine companies participated in the event. The DTI’s Export Marketing Bureau and International Trade Centre facilitated the participation of the Philippine companies in collaboration with the Game Developers Association of the Philippines.
Seaversity Inc. of Cebu had the opportunity to address game developers about serious gaming and the simulation world. Additionally, the Philippine companies visited renowned studios such as Game Habitat, Massive Entertainment (a Ubisoft Studio), Tarsier Studios, Avalanche Studios Group, and The Game Assembly.
DTI Trade Promotions Group (TPG) sssistant Secretary and officer-in-charge Glenn G. Peñaranda highlighted the significance of the initiative.
“This endeavor is part of our ongoing efforts to establish connections with potential European clients and diversify export markets for Philippine game development companies. With the support of the ARISE Plus Philippines Project funded by the European Union, Philippine companies were able to showcase their capabilities at Europe’s major game development conference and establish business connections with prospective clients,” he said.
Peñaranda expressed confidence in the Philippines’ ability to become a major global player in the game development sector through sustained efforts to develop and promote local capabilities. The preparations for the next mission to Gamescom 2023 in Cologne, Germany, are already underway.
