DENR to Di Caprio’s call to protect Masungi: No one is exempt from the law

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reiterated that the Masungi Georeserve Foundation Inc. (MGFI) is operating illegally within the protected area.

The DENR argued that the area occupied by MGFI and the operation of resorts offering day tours and events violate Philippine laws.

It also noted that the owners of Masungi Georeserve are linked to government housing projects currently under investigation by both houses of Congress.

Responding to a conservation call from Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio on Instagram, the DENR acknowledged the celebrity’s concern but pointed out that “no one is above the law.”

The Department of Justice also weighed in, suggesting that perpetual conservation under the MOA conflicts with constitutional limits.

DiCaprio’s social media post highlighted the past deforestation and the success of the restoration project undertaken by MGFI with local communities.

He expressed concern that canceling the agreement would endanger the protected area and leave it vulnerable to further exploitation.

MGFI, meanwhile, clarified that Masungi Georeserve is a non-profit conservation initiative operated by a duly registered non-stock, non-profit foundation.

It assured strict visitor protocols and adherence to carrying capacities to sustainably manage park visitors. (PNA)
