Beyond the ballgowns: Michael Cinco makes a statement at Cannes

by Eileen Mencias

While Michael Cinco’s creations dazzled the crowd at Cannes, Cinco himself had his moment on the red carpet at Cannes 2024.

Cinco, one of the Philippines’ most successful fashion designers, attended the prestigious film festival with Japanese models Kumi and Kazu, who wore his custom-made couture gowns in blush pink with floral embroidery.

His aesthetic stands out distinctly. Initially a fine arts student at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, he later transitioned to Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, where he acquired skills which now greatly benefit him. He further refined his craft by relocating to Paris in 2002 and undergoing training at the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London. Subsequently, in 2003, he ventured to Dubai, where he founded and established his brand.

At Cannes this year, the world-renowned designer had a ball.

“Red carpet emotions at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival,” Cinco said on his official Facebook account. He thanked Ryan Arbilo for filming him while he was with Kumi and Kazu on the red carpet.

Arbilo and his fellow photographers called out his name, causing him to turn around to face the cameras. “Choreography 80% Reality 20%,” Cinco mused.

At Cannes 2024, Cinco also dressed Cambodian actress Yubin Shin in a black liquid satin ballgown, former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach in a light blue liquid satin gown, Dubai Bling reality star Farhana Bodi, model Emilia Dobreva in a black liquid satin gown, and Polish actress Natalia Janoszek in a blush pink gown.
