3 BIR fixers fall after P3.6-M extortion try

Three suspected fixers who allegedly extorted over P3.6 million from individuals with tax issues were arrested on April 12 in an entrapment operation, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has announced.

In a statement, the BIR said the suspects claimed to have connections with BIR employees who could allegedly help taxpayers settle their tax issues.

The suspects reportedly forged the signatures of the BIR commissioner, the deputy commissioner for operations group, the deputy commissioner of the legal group, the assistant commissioner of the large taxpayer service, and a revenue district officer as part of their scheme.

“The arrest of this syndicate of fixers serves as a reminder to all taxpayers to avoid dealing with these groups and to always verify the authority of any person in dealing with your tax obligations,” Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said.

“We urge the public to report to the BIR these individuals/groups. We will help you entrap and arrest them,” he added.
